The Problem
Laser corneal sculpting is a medical procedure that involves the use of laser to reshape the surface of the eye. This is done to improve or correct myopia (short-sightedness), hypermetropia (long-sightedness) and astigmatism (uneven curvature of the eye’s surface).
The Procedure
Time tested for 35 years and continuously refined to still be the gold standard in getting rid of glasses under the age of 45. The most common feedback is “I wish I would’ve done it sooner!”. The latest lasers and scanners continue to improve outcomes with every new generation and in some cases, patients end up seeing even better than 20/20.
At our clinic specifically, we only perform surface treatments (advanced PRK) with no flaps and do not perform any surgery using the LASIK technique (lifted flaps). Calgary is the driest major city in North America and surface treatment greatly reduces the chance of developing dry eye and also eliminates any chance of flap complications. The trade-off is 2 days of discomfort following surface treatment. Advanced PRK is the surgery that Dr. Yau chose for himself due to its safety.
Additional benefits include never having to line-up for cataract surgery in your elder years and having added protection against developing future glaucoma. Both eyes can be done together in 20 minutes with good vision and no pain as early as a few hours after surgery.
Risks?
Dr. Yau will speak to you about your individual risk when consenting you for surgery.
